Do you recognise this?

  • Spain, Malaga, the Costa del Sol, it´s fantastic! Living here is incredible! Yet... the prospect of giving birth in Spain introduces an unexpected shift, stirring a sense of uncertainty. You don´t know the language that well, you have no idea how the maternity system exactly works and everything is new for you. The ambiguity leaves you seeking answers, navigating through unfamiliar territory. This leaves you feeling overwhelmed and secretly longing back to the familiarity of your home country.
  • Yearning for a natural birth, you find yourself grappling with doubts about its feasibility in a country known for its medicalized approach to childbirth. The whispers of a highly medicalized birth experience echo around you, leaving you pondering: ¨What does that truly entail? What kind of interventions are we looking at here? Is it really all that bad?¨ These questions leave you feeling uncertain and insecure about the possibility of achieving your desired natural birth.
  • Your baby is growing, and so are your questions. "How on earth will I get my baby out? How will I know labour has started? How does it feel? Do you always tear? Can a baby's head really fit through?" You want to understand what's happening in your body — but the more you search, the more overwhelming it gets.

  • And then there's the fear of the intensity. "Can I truly endure the rigours of childbirth? What if it becomes overwhelming? What if I'm asking too much of myself?" The what-ifs mount. You start to doubt yourself.

  • While your healthcare provider has been satisfactory in most aspects, certain concerns begin to surface. You would love to have assurance about the healthcare provider attending your birth, but you just learned there will be no guarantee. Additionally, despite your healthcare provider not being explicitly against natural birth, she does not seem to favour your requests to be able to move during birth, drink & eat and use natural pain relief. You start to feel more and more uncomfortable with your current healthcare provider.

How would it be for you if...

your options for birth are clear, you understand the maternity system in Spain and you know in which type of setting you want to give birth.

… you feel strong and knowledgeable. You have a clear picture of what natural birth looks like and the interventions that are common in Spain and you know what your own preferences are.

the mystery of labour is gone. You understand exactly what your body is doing at every stage — what the sensations mean, what each phase looks like, why it unfolds the way it does. That knowledge alone changes everything. You even find yourself looking forward to it.

… you are no longer afraid of the intensity of birth. You know how to move through it — with your breath, your body, your tools. You fully believe in your ability to handle whatever comes your way.

you chose the right healthcare provider fitting your preferences. You know your options, rights and what you can ask for. Your requests are being honoured, and you are being heard and taken seriously!

This is all possible when you book the HypnoBirthing group course.

This is your way to an amazing birth experience on your terms!

Why opt for the HypnoBirthing Group Course?

Small group size

Thanks to the small group sizes each individual can receive more individualized guidance, feedback, and support. It makes it more intimate and it's easier to create a safe space where everyone can share. Besides that it also allows for a more tailored learning experience, where participants can address their specific concerns, ask questions freely, and receive direct assistance with practicing techniques.

A group course fosters a sense of community, allowing participants to share experiences, concerns, and insights. The HypnoBirthing group course provides the opportunity to connect with other parents-to-be on a similar stage in life, fostering relationships that can extend beyond the classroom.

Strength in shared experiences

In a group setting, participants share experiences, insights, and questions, enriching the learning process and allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the HypnoBirthing techniques.

Who is the in-person HypnoBirthing group course for?

The course is for expat mothers-to-be and fathers-to-be or birth partners, in Malaga.

This course isn't just for mothers preparing for birth, but also for fathers or birth partners, so that they too feel confident and prepared to support you. This matters all the more when you're birthing in a country, and often a language, that isn't your own.

Whether you're a first-time parent or have given birth before, HypnoBirthing can benefit anyone who wants to learn natural pain-management techniques, reduce anxiety around childbirth, and build a deeper connection with their birth partner. And because it's designed for expat parents in Spain, you'll gain the tools and know-how to navigate the Spanish birthing process, hospital or home, with ease, confidence and empowerment.

Can my doula join one of the course sessions?

No, doulas don’t normally attend the group course. The course is designed for expectant parents and their birth partner, and keeping the sessions focused on the couples taking the course helps create the best learning experience for everyone.

That said, your doula is very welcome to get in touch with me if she’d like to understand how HypnoBirthing works and how she can support you alongside what you’re learning.

Do I need to attend every session with my birth partner?

Ideally, yes. HypnoBirthing works best when your birth partner learns the techniques alongside you. You’ll have the same information from the start, making it much easier to make decisions together.

A prepared partner can be your calm, capable advocate, which matters enormously when you’re birthing in a system, and sometimes a language, that isn’t your own. If they do miss part of a session, the workbook and audios make it easy to catch up. If they can’t attend all the classes, we can also arrange an additional partner session for an extra fee. Just get in touch to discuss what would work best.

I'm planning a hospital birth. Is HypnoBirthing still for me?

Yes. HypnoBirthing is a very complete prenatal course that benefits all parents. It doesn't matter whether you're planning a hospital birth, a home birth, a water birth, a land birth, a birth with or without medical intervention, or even a caesarean. HypnoBirthing will benefit you. The course gives you evidence-based birth information so you can make healthy, informed decisions that feel right for your family, while helping you understand how birth and maternity care work here in Spain.

I'm planning to have an epidural. Can I still benefit from HypnoBirthing?

Absolutely. While HypnoBirthing classes are primarily focused on natural childbirth techniques and pain management without medication, there are still many reasons to take the course even if you're planning to use medication during labour.

The classes help reduce anxiety and give you valuable information and techniques that are beneficial regardless of your birth plan. Even though the course emphasises coping with pain without medication, you'll still gain real insight into relaxation, breathing techniques, and how to create a positive birthing environment , and staying calm and informed matters just as much when you're navigating a hospital birth in Spain. Ultimately, the decision depends on your own preferences and goals for childbirth, and the tools you learn here will serve you whichever path you take.

My hospital offers a free birth course. Why would I need another course?

Please do go along to the hospital course too. It's a great way to see the ward and meet the staff. But an independent course like this one does a very different job. Here's why parents choose to do both:

  • You'll learn a range of tools and options for natural pain relief that (in most cases) aren't offered or taught in the healthcare provider's or hospital's course.
  • Independent childbirth education isn't based on the policies of the hospital or healthcare provider, so nothing is left out because it doesn't suit their routine.
  • You'll know all your options for childbirth, not just what your particular hospital offers.
  • You'll watch birthing videos that inspire, rather than frighten.
  • You know exactly who your teacher is; a familiar, consistent face for all five weeks, not a rotating room of staff.
  • Birth partners are far more involved, they leave feeling genuinely prepared to support you.
  • You'll be fully informed to create your birth preferences  and, because this course is built for expats, you'll get those preferences numbered in Spanish and English, ready to hand to your Spanish care team.
  • It's in English, in a small group, so you understand everything fully and there's real time for your questions.

When should I start the in-person HypnoBirthing course during pregnancy?

I recommend starting the course between 18 and 30 weeks of pregnancy. Most parents take the course during their second trimester or early third trimester, giving you plenty of time to practise the techniques before your baby arrives. If you’re not sure when the timing is right for you, just message me and we’ll figure it out together.

Does HypnoBirthing mean I won't feel pain during birth?

It can be, although HypnoBirthing doesn't promise a painless birth. You'll still feel your body working for you. You'll be given techniques to facilitate your body's natural process, which can result in a painless birth. Some women (like me!) experience a partial or even painless birth; others experience some sensations that are generally tolerable.

There's no guarantee you'll have a painless birth. It takes your commitment to practising the exercises taught in class and getting comfortable with the hypnosis techniques, which is achievable for everyone with a little practice.

And bear in mind that how you look back on your birth depends on many things, not just the feeling of pain. A birth can be deeply positive and empowering even with some amount of pain, especially when you feel calm, informed and in control of what's happening around you.

What can HypnoBirthing actually do for me?

Typically, HypnoBirthing families approach their births fully prepared and feel satisfied with their birth experience. Although not every mother has a pain-free birth or the exact birth she planned. Even so, the birth-satisfaction rate among HypnoBirthing mothers is higher than among those who don't use it.

Mums tell me the course brought them:

  • Far less anxiety and fear around pregnancy and birth
  • The confidence to make their own informed choices, even when things didn't go to plan
  • A feeling of being strong and in control, so they look back on their birth positively
  • Shorter, more comfortable, easier labours, with less need for intervention or pain relief
  • A deep sense of empowerment and pride in their own strength and capability

And for expat parents, that calm sense of control is worth even more, it's exactly what carries you through an appointment or a decision in an unfamiliar system, in a language that isn't your first.

What is HypnoBirthing, and why is it called that?

HypnoBirthing combines childbirth education with hypnosis and deep relaxation techniques. The name can make it sound as though it’s simply about hypnosis, but there’s much more to it than that.

You’ll learn breathing techniques, relaxation, self-hypnosis, visualisations, affirmations and, importantly, how birth works physiologically. We also look at how maternity care works in Spain and the cultural differences you may come across as an expat, so you can understand your options and make informed choices.

The aim is to prepare both your mind and body for birth, helping you understand what’s happening, stay calm and relaxed, and approach your birth with confidence.

So yes, hypnosis is part of HypnoBirthing, but it’s really a complete approach to preparing for birth, with the added context of giving birth in Spain.

I'm not sure about the hypnosis part. What actually happens?

Completely understandable, the name throws a lot of people. HypnoBirthing has nothing to do with stage hypnosis or being "put under." You're fully awake, aware and in control the whole time. It's really just deep relaxation and focused breathing. It is the same calm, focused state you slip into when you're absorbed in a good book or a long drive. The name simply reflects that we use self-hypnosis techniques to help your body relax and let labour progress as it's designed to. You don't need to "believe" in anything for it to work, you just practise the techniques, and they do the work.
